The Stunning Suki Waterhouse, Our April 2017 Vanities Star

The U.K. native is already a fashion-world staple, but this month she sets her sights on Hollywood, with the lead role in Starz’s The White Princess.

AGE: 25.

PROVENANCE: London, England.

BLOWUP: Discovered at 16, Waterhouse became an international “It girl” overnight. “I didn’t feel like I fit into the fashion world—I’m not a six-foot gazelle. Burberry was my big fashion break.”

STIFF UPPER LIP: Acting is her inherent calling. “All anyone does is act—starting as a baby playing peekaboo for applause. Then, when you get into the business side, 90 percent is dealing with rejection.”

HORSING AROUND: This month she stars as Cecily of York in the Starz mini-series adaptation of Philippa Gregory’s The White Princess. “I go against my family, even though the stakes are high to keep the throne. I ride sidesaddle for the action scenes.”

90210: Later this year, she’ll trade corset for Corvette as Quintana in a remake of Billionaire Boys Club. “It’s a true story about some very naughty boys who get caught up in a Ponzi scheme—the girls are just as cheeky.”

IN THE CAN: Future projects include The Bad Batch, with Keanu Reeves, Future World, with James Franco, and Sam (son of Barry) Levinson’s Assassination Nation.

ENTREPRENEUR: Waterhouse founded the predominantly pink accessories line Pop & Suki with best friend Poppy Jamie. “I’m excited about expansion, and I love all the messages that our color pink encompasses today.”

In today’s edition of What to Wear This Week, Poppy Jamie and Suki Waterhouse, founders of accessory brand Pop & Suki, break down the mechanics of what they wear when going out and why.

What do you think about when you get dressed in the morning?

Poppy Jamie: Ummmm, usually what emails I have forgotten to reply to and finding an outfit that makes me feel sassy.

Suki Waterhouse: What I have to do today. How I need to feel to take on the day. I like to get specific. Sometimes I need to create a nesty cave of clothing around me to feel safe and cocooned from the world. Sometimes I’m lost without a hat. Or maybe I need to feel sharp when I’m not quite feeling like that. A blow dry helps.

Pop & Suki: meet the besties behind the bags

Twenty millennial stars shot in L.A. and N.Y. — including Ansel Elgort, Suki Waterhouse and Tye Sheridan — reveal what’s Hollywood about their lives (“health insurance from SAG!”), embarrassing auditions for Eminem (“I said, I want hair on my back”) and inspirations from Russell Simmons to Julia Roberts.

“People would tell me all the time, ‘You’re so not a model, you’re such an actress,’ and I’d be like, ‘I know, I’m such a shit model,'” jokes the London native of her transition from that career to acting, which took off when she landed the lead opposite Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey in The Bad Batch, a cannibal love story that premiered in September at the Toronto Film Festival. In the queue (after a few months of acting classes in New York): the crime thriller Billionaire Boys Club and the sci-fi drama Jonathan (both with her Insurgent co-star Ansel Elgort) as well as Starz miniseries The White Princess.

I’m still starstruck by: “I did come across Julia Roberts once, and I just kind of convulsed, and then I whispered, ‘Thank you.’ ”

What made me want to act: “Sex, Lies and Videotape. I’m obsessed with Laura San Giacomo.”

How I celebrated my first big role: “I don’t really celebrate. I think, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got so much work to do.'”

Pop & Suki: meet the besties behind the bags

As I have been staring at Suki Waterhouse’s black lace bra for the best part of an hour, it seems only right to ask her where she got it. “It’s from Elyse Walker in LA,” she grins, totally unfussed that her stripy jacket is wide open and her bralet and taut stomach are flashing at all the breakfasting businessmen.

But then, why should Waterhouse be fussed by an attention-grabbing bralet? Life is going pretty well. The 24-year-old London-born model, who has fronted campaigns for Burberry, H&M and New Look, has moved successfully beyond a Hollywood power romance with Bradley Cooper to build a burgeoning acting career. She received rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival last month for her role in the dystopian drama ‘The Bad Batch’.

“We wanted something that you can personalize,” model and actress Suki Waterhouse says of Pop & Suki, the accessories line she started with her business partner and best friend Poppy Jamie. The brand features high-quality — yet affordable — pieces like bags, luggage tags, jewelry and charms (including a high-fashion update on the BFF broken heart necklace) that can be customized in a range of colors and monograms. But most of all, Pop & Suki “celebrates friendship and girls working together,” Poppy says. The duo’s own friendship began on the dancefloor of an LA nightclub (“It was love at first sight,” according to Poppy) and they’ve been inseparable ever since, going everywhere from Machu Picchu to the Amazon rainforest together. This spirit of adventure influences the way they conceive of the pieces in their collection. “We’re super into juxtaposition,” Poppy explains. “A girl can be a massive tomboy but also love a bit of dressing up.” Tell all your friends.

In the new issue, out 3rd November, Suki talks online dating, being rubbish on social media and reveals what the future has in store.

Discussing her love life, Suki, who previously dated Bradley Cooper, said: “I’m on Raya [a dating app popular with celebrities, aka The Illuminati Tinder]. Me and my sister [Immy, also a model and actress] are on it. We just talk to each other instead of potential dates. I know that in the future I want to be in a committed, loving relationship and have kids. Even though I’m happy being single, I spend a lot of time dreaming about being in love. But right now, I’m building… I’m doing all these things for me. I don’t know if I have the tools to be in a relationship right now.”

Suki is too busy for love, what with a stellar modelling career and a new business venture with her TV presenter best friend, Poppy Jamie. The pair decided there were no fashion brands who catered for girls who wanted to enjoy fashion with their friends, so they decided to do something about it. Enter accessories brand, POP&SUKI. The collection launches at the end of the month, and it’s guaranteed to be on everyone’s Christmas list this year.

Suki and Poppy are very active on social media, but Suki says it’s not all as it seems: “It’s all grossly inaccurate,” she said. “Everything that’s put on social media is distorted. All these steps that you take to show everyone on the internet that you’re perfect.

“It’s not even a tiny bit like it. But still, I’ll look at someone’s account and think, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to be her?’ It’s stupid. I know that people are looking at my account and might be thinking the same.”
